The benefits of coaching myself through sobriety

Updated: Sep 9

At the beginning of September '24, I decided to quit drinking indefinitely. It was negatively impacting my life, and I felt that if I quit, it would only have positive impacts on my life.

I was right.

For those that know me, I used to love a drink, especially Guinness. But I got to the stage in life where I could see too much drinking was negatively affecting me - the long hangovers, lots of hang-xiety/beerfear, and low moods, unproductive days (gym and diet out the window!), inconsistency, unresponsive to friends and family, and basically just not being my best-self.

So I decided to change all that. Without any help, I embarked on a pretty extreme goal - no drinking alcohol for as long as I could.

More than a year on, I'm still sober, and to be honest...it's been pretty easy. I've been to an Irish wedding and techno festival sober, and the reason it's been easy for me, is because being sober has positively impacted the things most important to me in life.

The relationship with my family is so important to me. I wasn't always present & consistent with them in the past, especially on weekends, but the clearer mind I had from sobriety meant I spent more time with them, communicated more, and our relationship has grown even better.

Physical health is also very important to me. My liver & kidneys would of course thank me for less drinking, but it allowed me to fully invest into getting into better physical shape. It gave me the space to consistently action my gym and diet goals each week.

Finally, I'm a spiritual person, and sobriety helped me reconnect more with my spiritual side. I was experiencing less anxiety and low moods, so I could meditate more often and consistently action my spiritual rituals each week like my long walks.

So in summary, whatever your goal is, my belief is that if your goal positively impacts the things most important to you in life, you will have the strength to achieve it. Maybe even easily..
